Marta Haladzhun: Slime Mold
Installatives Stück für Geige, Elektronik und Licht
(2025)Neither animal, fungus nor plant, slime molds such as Physarum polycephalum exist outside conventional categories or systematics. Based on this existence in an in-between space, one could say, following Michel Foucault, that slime molds embody, inhabit and create heterotopias, i.e. places that fall off the grid somewhere between reality and unreality due to their otherness.
They are a symbol of adaptability, invisibility, decay and memory. The organism moves between life and death–it is both collectively intelligent and chaotic. As carriers of knowledge and memory, slime molds serve as a medium to explore the tension between biological existence and digital systems.
In »Slime Mold« I explore this threshold space where natural and synthetic sounds, analog and digital worlds converge in a landscape of sound and light while violinist Malin Grass interacts with a reactive light installation and enters into a dialog with the digital slime mold.
