for Hardanger Fiddle
(1997)A philtre is a ‘love potion’. This piece for the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle exploits the instrument’s resonance strings (rather like an Indian sitar) with a low-voiced tuning to weave a texture of murmuring resonances.
The work can also be played on a standard violin (tuned FCEB). The Hardanger version has also been played with a higher tuning where the 2 lower strings were retuned up a tone & 2 upper strings down a semitone to give: A E Aflat Eflat. This was in the context of the work being performed together with my other work with hardanger fiddle ‘Winding Bodies: 3 Knots’ (2013).
