Nina Perović: Penetrations III

for six vocals and electronics

CONCERT

»Apparatus« (2025) represents an extended version of the earlier work »Penetrations III« (2022). The composition is thematically based on the audio recordings from a socio-psychodrama workshop on the topic of Yugoslavia held in 2022, integrating original recordings of the workshop participants whose improvised roles–Yugoslavia, Violence, Us, Composition, and Justice–also appear within the piece. Building on this conceptual framework, »Apparatus« expands the sonic world through the inclusion of video and tape electronics. It juxtaposes archival footage of war with turbo-folk and folkloric elements, interwoven with intimate family videos shot by the composer’s parents–a family that directly experienced the war, escaping Mostar via Cyprus and London before settling in Montenegro.

CODA

»Fracture« engages with the relations and tensions embedded in wartime and postwar conflicts. The work examines how identities, communication, and memory shape one another under pressure, with dialogue foregone, revealing complex power relations and ethical dilemmas. The question remains, unchanged, haunting the present as it haunted the past, about what follows after all of this.

Nina Perović (*1985, Montenegro) Nina Perović completed her undergraduate and specialist studies in composition and piano at the Music Academy in Cetinje, earned a Master of Composition at the Music Academy in Ljubljana and completed her doctoral studies at the Faculty of Musical Arts in Belgrade. She has pursued specialization studies in Graz and is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in musical theater at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK).

Nina Perović composes acoustic and electronic music. Her works have been performed at numerous festivals in the region and in Europe. She is employed as a lecturer at the Music Academy in Cetinje and has received numerous scholarships as a visiting lecturer, notably a Goethe-Institut scholarship and a DAAD scholarship for staff exchange.
