Georges Aperghis: Passwords

for six voices

(2016)

The password was once used by the military to identify themselves at borders. Today, we are haunted by passwords and credentials in our everyday lives, creating amalgams of words and ciphers to secure ourselves. The words used are deprived of their original meaning and their arrangement among each other creates an unusual syntax, a kind of polyphony of meaninglessness. This is what the six singers in the piece surrender to, in an attempt to conquer the changes in the combinations with which they operate.
