Tianyang Zhang: Mo I

für Firebird-Trompete, E-Gitarre, Posaune und Violoncello

(2023)

»MO« means »ink« in Chinese. It is the most important drawing material throughout Chinese art history. What inspired me so much are the different brush strokes through which both the brightness of the light and the distance from different perspectives can be depicted. The starting point for me was a painting in which the delicacy of flower petals and the hardness of stones are vividly characterized by the density and thickness of the lines and the different consistencies of the ink. The combination of musical gestures in my work resembles this painting: the characters of the sound figures in »MO I« result from the contrast between them. They are constructed not only by »lines«, but also by the emptiness I construct on the musical canvas.
