Bengisu Önder: AI Study No.1

This electronic study is the first presentation of my ongoing exploration of neural networks and their potential in music. By integrating various pre-trained models with an individually trained choral model, I explore poetic possibilities for AI in sound creation. This research considers AI as both an instrument and a collaborator in the music creation process.
The piece is based on an existential meditation on being, not-being and ‘maybe-being’, inspired by a text by Natalia Laguens. The dialogue between machine and voice reflects the questions that outline the unclear relationship of AI to our lives. As the neural network processes these reflections, it creates an unpredictable soundscape that mirrors my journey towards realising and creatively
expanding the role of AI in music.
This work invites listeners to reflect on consciousness, the flow of time and the fragile boundary between life and silence, and contributes to a broader search for new forms of musical expression.

Bengisu Önder is a composer whose sensitivity to world events is directly reflected in her work and whose talent as a composer of instrumental and electronic music is characterised by her deep interest in the cognitive structuring of materials and the creation of expressive meaning. Born into a musical family, she received her first piano lessons from her father. After completing her piano studies at the Ankara State Conservatory, she was accepted into the Bachelor’s degree programme in Composition at the HMDK Stuttgart in 2018, where she studies in Marco Stroppa’s class.
From 2020 to 2022 she presented her works at the annual IRCAM Forum Paris. In June 2021 and 2022, she participated in the festival "ne(x)t generation" organised by the ZKM. In 2021 she became a tutor in the Electronic Music Studio at the HMDK Stuttgart. For the concert season 2021–2022 she was an academist of the SWR Vokalensemble in composition. In February 2022 she took part in the Diotima Quartet Academy in Metz. In August 2023, her trio ‘105 Saniye’, dedicated to the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, was performed by Lucy Shelton, Steve Dann and Anssi Karttunen.

For the academic year 2022/23, she was accepted as an exchange student at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP), where she studied composition with Frédéric Durieux and electronic music with Yan Maresz, Luis Naon and Grégoire Lorieux.
In September 2024, she was part of the collaborative opera ‘Butterfly Room Service’ as composer of scene six at the Royaumont Voix Nouvelles Academy, under the direction of composers Francesco Filidei, Bernhard Lang and Sivan Eldar. She is currently continuing her Master’s degree in Computer Music in the classes of Marco Stroppa and Piet Johan Meyer.
