Rolf Riehm’s composition »In the Nightingale Valley« draws on the myth of Orpheus. When his singing head, nailed to his lyre, was washed ashore on the island of Lesbos, the nightingales in the Nightingale Valley burst into magnificent song. Riehm has this story »told« by a cellist who, in a rapid succession of roles, embodies the river, the singing head, landscapes, the sea, flora and fauna, dance and joy. In Reflections of Eternity, Michael Pelzel gives compositional shape to decaying sounds. As in many of her scores, Elena Rykova explores the fragility and impact of sound through the creative use of amplification.
