The world is in turmoil. Yet music still plays. Different realities play a role in the three new works for the SWR Symphony Orchestra. For Malin Bang, guitarist Frederik Munk Larsen is a ‘Cicerone’, a guide through orchestral spaces of memory. Contrasts define Arnulf Herrmann’s music. And the seemingly »calm, steady footing« in Oxana Omelchuk’s piece is reminiscent of Brecht’s »calves« on their way to the slaughterhouse–so it is anything but secure. But, as Herrmann says, the orchestra also embodies vigilance, community and interaction, and thus »ultimately a utopia.«
