Noise Is a Queer Space designs an installative course and a social environment.
A large number of snare drums form an expansive structure. With the help of a live electronic control system, percussionist Håkon Stene generates continuously changing sound states: rhythmically overlapping fields condense into sound surfaces, synchronize or shrink into loosely scattered individual events.
In their diversity, the snare drums exhibit a great sonic heterogeneity. Each individual snare sound comes from a different pop-cultural context and exemplifies sonic diversity and the plurality of identities. Almost all snare sounds and samples in Noise Is a Queer Space were donated by guest writers (Queers & Allies), including Jennifer Walshe, Stellan Veloce, Chaya Czernowin, Timothy McCormack, Neo Hülcker, Wojtek Blecharz, Kari Watson and Sara Glojnarić.
Noise Is a Queer Space is not a fixed composition. Rather, it is a variable playing environment with prefabricated sounds, modules and patterns; an open form. In the fluidity and provisional nature of this setting, the boundaries between composition, installation and free play are deliberately undermined. Something similar happens through the augmentation of authorship.
The end result is a kind of acoustic group selfie: queer, solidary, personal, hedonistic.
A space full of love and desire.
