People, masses and power were the themes of a musical theatre piece recently performed by the SWR Vocal Ensemble at the Salzburg Pocket Opera Festival. Three of the works composed for this occasion are now being premiered as concert pieces. They address manipulation and power, powerlessness and resistance using vocal and choral sound rather than words. ‘The work does not tell; it listens,’ says composer Vito Žuraj. The two new works for the Aleph Guitar Quartet also listen: imaginatively to the spectra of the instruments or to the colours of lupins.

* Composition commissioned by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Aleph Guitar Quartet,

made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

** German premiere made possible by S-K-A-M e.V. Stuttgart,

supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation
