Maria Kalesnikava, a former colleague of Musik der Jahrhunderte and a political prisoner in Belarus since 2020, has been honoured with the Günter Wallraff Prize for Press Law and Human Rights 2025, together with the country’s journalists’ association.

In its citation, the News Enlightenment Initiative states that Maria is ‘a symbolic figure, representative of the many people who have sacrificed their freedom and their lives for a free and democratic Belarus’.

The prize, which is endowed with a total of 5,000 euros, will be awarded on Friday, 9 May 2025, at the Cologne Forum for Journalism Criticism on Deutschlandfunk radio.

The aim of the prize is to draw attention to topics and discourses that are neglected in the German and international media.
