CLASH is a diversified project which has been initiated to convey the world of New Music to pupils and students in and around Stuttgart, to form a gateway into New Music and to create a level of understanding for contemporary art.

The word CLASH is used in its literal sense and is synonymous to the programme: musically, there is a clash of one ore more cymbals in Nicolaus A. Huber’s Clash Music. Socially, there is an even bigger clash of circumstances between pupils and musicians whereby the emerging creative energy yields a variety of artistic results. Since Summer 2004, Musik der Jahrhunderte has been conducting BEGINNER concerts, study groups and workshops within the Stuttgart region which have brought together more than 1000 children and youngsters aged 7 to 25 of all kinds of schools.

They are meeting composers, musicians and sound artists at school, at rehearsals or concerts, at workshops, at music theatre or percussion projects and through being curious and creative are starting to explore the sensuous world of New Music. Testing a whole range of sounds from classic instruments, everyday objects and their own voices is just as important as the reflection on music and its creating process in a context of society or individual identities. At the end of each workshop, pupils take centre stage – often together with the pros – and perform or relate their view on contemporary music.

The first children and youth congress “N[you] – Music in a globalized world” which took place in July 2006 showed a kaleidoscope of options: a so-called “Speech-Hodgepodge-Music-Theatre” composed from the melodies of various mother tongues or an orchestra made from pots, glasses and plastic bottles both put together by primary school children. The continuous work of CLASH and highlights such as this congress are creating a tight network between pupils, teachers and musicians enriching young people and artists now and in future.
